"Play That Funky Music" is a funk song written by Robert Parissi and recorded by the band Wild Cherry. The performers on the classic recording included the members of the band at the time: lead singer Parissi, guitarist Bryan Bassett, bassist Allen Wentz, and drummer Ron Beitle, with session horn players Chuck Berginc, Jack Brndiar, Joe Eckert, and Rick Singer hired to play the horn riff that runs throughout the track's verses. The single hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 18, 1976 and was also number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart. The single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of over two million records. The song was also the basis of a top five U.S. hit for Vanilla Ice in 1990.

"Linger" is a song composed by Irish musicians Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan of the rock band The Cranberries. The song, which has an acoustic arrangement featuring a string section, became the band's first major hit, peaking at #3 in the Republic of Ireland, #8 in the US and #14 in the UK.



In the documentary '99 Love Life & Rock 'n' Roll, O'Riordan says that the song is about her first serious kiss.

Les Nubians is an R&B Grammy-nominated duo composed of sisters Hélène and Célia Faussart from Paris, France. In 1985 the sisters moved with their parents to Chad. Seven years later, they returned to Bordeaux, France, and began singing a cappella, producing poetry slams in Bordeaux and Paris, and singing background vocals for various artists worldwide. The duo's debut album Princesses Nubiennes was released by Virgin Records, France, in 1998.



They have become one of the most successful French-language musical groups in the U.S. Best known for their Billboard R&B Top Ten Single "Makeda" and Grammy nominated song "Je Veux D'la Musique" from their second album One Step Forward. Les Nubians were the 1999 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards winners for Best New Artist, Group or Duo and received two NAACP Image Awards nominations in 2000.

The duo executive-produced Echos, Chapter One in 2005 on their label Nubiatik; a joint venture with Triloka Records. The project features artists from France, and the U.S. performing poetry and music from the urban edge. Echos, Chapter One: Nubian Voyager was released in 2006 as a book accompaniment to the CD.

"Stutter" is a 2000 song by American R&B singer Joe. The original version of the song was produced by Roy "Royalty" Hamilton and Teddy Riley. Written by Roy "Royalty" Hamilton and Ernest E. Dixon. A remix by Soulstar (marketed as "The Double Take Remix", due to its appearance in the similarly titled 2001 film, Double Take) features rapper Mystikal, and was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States for four weeks in 2001. The song refers to Joe's girlfriend "stuttering" because she is lying to him about having an affair. The song samples "Passin' Me By" by The Pharcyde.

"I Wanna Be Down" is the debut song performed by American singer Brandy. It was co-written and produced by Keith Crouch and Kipper Jones for the singer's self-titled debut studio album, Brandy (1994), and released as its lead single during the third quarter of 1994 (see 1994 in music). The song's impact on the charts was comparatively large for a debut single: While it spent four weeks on top of the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart, it reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the top 20 in Australia and New Zealand.



Atlantic Records decided to produce two music videos for the single. The original clip was directed by Keith Ward and premiered prior to the single's official release in September 1994. In the following months another video for a remix of the song, entitled "Human Rhythm Hip Hop Remix", was shot by Hype Williams. It features female rappers MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Yo-Yo, and was partially black-and-white and partially in color, a young Ray J made a cameo appearance in the video. Latter version eventually earned Brandy her first nomination for "Best Rap Video" at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards.

The song was featured on Norwood's own series, Moesha in the pilot episode and the sang the theme song on the line where she follow her boyfriend Ohagi (now-deceased Merlin Santana). The song was also featured on the FOX police drama New York Undercover on September 29, 1994 two days after the release of Brandy's debut album.

"Word Up!" is a funk/hip hop song written and originally recorded by Cameo in 1986. Due to its heavy play on American dance and R&B radio, as well as music video play on MTV (which has LeVar Burton as a police detective trying to arrest the band), the single became the band's most well-known hit.

From the album of the same name, "Word Up!" was Cameo's first US Top 40 hit, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and also spent three weeks at number one on the US Hot Black Singles chart. "Janie's Got a Gun" is a song performed by American hard rock band Aerosmith and written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton. It was originally titled "Danny's got a Gun" after a close friend of Steven Tyler, but was later changed. It was released as the second single from Pump in 1989. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990, and also made it to #2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Maze a soul / quiet storm band, also known alternately as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and Frankie Beverly and Maze, was established in San Francisco, California in the early 1970s.



The band can be considered as the project of former The Butlers, and later Raw Soul, member Frankie Beverly; being songwriter, record producer, arranger, singer, keyboardist and guitarist.

The Philadelphia born Beverly started the group as Raw Soul in 1970. They recorded a couple of singles on the small Gregar label, but without any major hits. But with a few personnel changes, a relocation from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Bay Area in California in 1971, and an introduction to Marvin Gaye, the group became an immediate success. Gaye took the group on the road with him as one of his opening acts, and in 1976 he suggested that they changed their name from Raw Soul to Maze.

Maze signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1976, and released their debut album, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, in 1977. From that album, the hit singles included "Happy Feelin's", "While I'm Alone", and "Lady of Magic"; ultimately giving them their first gold record and earning Maze a devoted fan base. They also had success with the following albums Golden Time of Day (1978), Inspiration (1979) and Joy and Pain (1980).

Their next recording was Live in New Orleans, three quarters of which was recorded at the Saenger Theatre, on November 14–15, 1980. Three of those songs got into the US R&B chart, including "Running Away", "Before I Let You Go", and "We Need Love To Live". By that time, the band had both a reputation in America and also enjoyed a following in the United Kingdom with promotional support from the British DJ Robbie Vincent. In May 1985, Maze sold out eight nights at the Hammersmith Odeon.

Minnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves and her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children - music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.



If there was a track that would be described as her “goin’ home” song, no doubt it was “Memory Lane” – Minnie’s reflection of her past while knowing what indeed was in the future. "Memory Lane" was a hit and was arguably Riperton's greatest work. Riperton incorporated the sadness of the ending of a relationship while suddenly shifting to cries of "I don't want to go" and "save me." It is thought that "Memory Lane" was her farewell to her family and to the world.

The song was originally released on a limited edition EP called Extra Credit as a demo in 2005 to promote his second studio album Mr. A–Z. It was performed in his 2004 and 2005 gigs and already became a crowd favorite before its release. "I'm Yours" was nominated for Grammy Award for Song of the Year[1] and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards. It was also used for the Australian Seven Network's promotion of the season premiere of Packed to the Rafters.

"I'm Yours" was immensely successful in the U.S. on the Billboard charts.
